The summer is coming to a close, but it’s not quite over yet! Make the most of the end of the season by bringing together your family and closest friends for a backyard BBQ. You may have had a chance to peek at our previous blog with healthy BBQ recipes. Now is the perfect time to fire up the grill, and make those chicken kabobs and black bean veggie burgers. Throwing a summer BBQ is a great way to have fun without breaking the bank or leaving your home. Here are some tips on hosting a great barbeque from our team at Brooks Village Green Homes.

Prepare

As casual and laid back Summer BBQs can be, it’s always important to prepare. Marinate your meats a day in advance, and prepare the drinks. You can chill some homemade lemonade or let some berries and fruits infuse in a pitcher of water.

  • Label – You might also want to label a couple of your trays in advance with “rare,” medium rare” and “well-done.” On the day of your BBQ, you can place the grilled meat accordingly on the corresponding trays.
  • Store – A great tip for keeping the flies and other pests away from your side dishes is to store them in advance in individual portion sized lidded jars or containers. Each guest can have their own salad container that they can keep covered until they’re ready to chow down.

Games

Don’t make your BBQ all about the food! Have some fun yard games prepared – cornhole, badminton, lawn darts or even croquet! You can also quickly create a backyard DIY bowling alley. Fill empty bottles with water (add food coloring for a decorative effect), and use them as bowling pins!

Music

No BBQ is complete without an awesome playlist. Pick your favorite tunes from the summer, or stick to the classic bluegrass and Americana. Curate a selection of songs that make you smile, or even make you want to get up and dance!

Decorations

You don’t have to splurge on new decorations. Bring out those Christmas lights from the garage and string them along your backyard. Streamers and balloons are also standard for great barbecue décor.

Keep Cool

As much as we love the summer sun, too much sun isn’t always fun. Have a basket of hand fans ready for your guests, as well as sunblock and bug spray.
